Haley Hall, a senior at Greene County High School, will be among the 98 girls at the prestigious American Legion Girls Nation in Washington DC July 22-29.
She was selected for that honor at Iowa Girls State on the Drake University campus June 18-23. Two girls were selected from 270 applicants to represent Iowa at Girls Nation.
Girls Nation provides young women leaders experience with how the federal government works. They are “senators” in a mock legislature, hold a national convention, and elect a president and vice president. They will spend a day on Capitol Hill meeting with their Congressional delegation. A highlight of Girls Nation is often meeting the president.
Hall has already met Rep. Steve King. She introduced State Auditor Mary Mosiman at a Greene County Republican fundraiser in April. Hall arrived at the event after it started because of a track meet in Carroll. King commented that it must have been a lovely sight to see Hall run with her hair flowing behind her.
Hall is sponsored at Girls State and Girls Nation by American Legion Post 11. The post has not promoted Boys State or Girls State in recent years. Phil Thompson, one of the youngest members of the post, brought the program to the fore. Post commander Jim Andrew said, “We have been very impressed with Haley’s qualifications and enthusiasm and we give her our full support in representing the best Greene County has to offer.”
Haley is the daughter of Denny and Janelle Hall of Jefferson.
Girls Nation alumnae include news broadcaster Jane Pauley; Lt Gen Michelle Johnson, superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy; and Ann Richards, former governor of Texas.
